Red Storm is a large, rectangular abstract painting created with a series of red, copper, blue, mint green and purple coloured enamel paints. It’s fresh, bold and has a wealth of wonderful details.
The beating heart
That big red mass is at the very centre of this panting and is most definitely the focal point. It also happens to be the part that everything else circulates around. On one side we have a cool, calming purple that’s deep and rich whilst on the other side you can see the swirling oceans. This is all neatly constrained by two areas of mint green – essential for keeping this whole mass in check.
A closer look at the more detailed images will reveal and playful series of boundary markers where the big areas of paint collide with each other. Far from being anarchic or disregarded, these areas actually remain very structured and beautifully detailed. There may be a storm brewing but it’s never allowed to descend into chaos or unruliness.
Getting balance
When you’re placing large masses of colour it can be very easy for any composition to feel unbalanced and heavy. So much of the success of this kind of painting relies upon the relative volumes of each colour and where they are placed in relation to each other.
One must also consider the actual colour selections too; this becomes the single most fundamental underpinning to any painting. This is what direclty affect how you feel about it.
As red is the dominant colour here I can’t afford for it to be too overpowering, yet it must also perform a function. So too does every other colour, whether that be in direct relation to the red or one of the the supporting colours. Getting proportions, tones and details to balance is a skill I am constantly refining.
The finished piece
Nuanced, light, powerful, emotive, detailed and joyful. Those would be the words I would use to describe it. Whtther it be in a dining room, a hallway, a bedroom or behind a sofa Red Storm is one of those rare pieces of art that captivates and enthralls from the moment you see it.
