Kitchen splashbacks

Tiles, stainless steel and glass all have their place but when you want something a bit different you have to think a bit different.

When you go to the time and trouble to build your dream home it’s worth adding those finishing touches that give it personality and definition. I’ve done a few splashbacks for clients who want to do something memorable and unique

In this example my client wanted to echo the colours from a much-loved Paul Smith dinner service.

The Brief

Create two kitchen splashbacks (one each for the kitchen and utility room) matching the colours of a dinner service by Paul Smith
Do TWO versions of each
Created in a Pollock-esque style with plenty of white showing underneath.
One to measure 3050mm long, the other to measure 1800mm long
Holes cut for the plug sockets
To be completed by a specific day (pre-Christmas)

The Spec

Specially extruded (no joins) 10mm thick polycarbonate clear sheets cut to length and width (and to the depth of the lip on the work surface)
One base coat of white enamel paint
Top paint applications colour matched
Paints able to withstand bleach, kitchen cleaners, hot water, UV, scrubbing brushes and minor knocks and bangs
Bonded to the wall and sealed at either end

The Result

What the client has now is a unique artwork that will never be replicated and a bold statement at the heart of her beautiful kitchen.
It’s also great fun too; adding conversation, light and colour to almost every part of the space.
There is a second set of splashbacks that were created for this commission. I always do two variations on any theme so that you get choices.
These took around four weeks to create which also includes curing time for the paints.

Breakfast bar art

There’s no limit to what can be done if you have a little imagination.
What about a breakfast bar with a large open space underneath?

For my client the need to relive memories of Asia and all the colours that are associated with it were critical – as was the desire to match the colour of his sensational highlight colour in the kitchen.

Inspired by ancient cast Buddhas, Thai street festivals, daffodils and that all important raspberry colour I gave him and his family a unique and eye-catching original artwork (set behind 8mm polycarbonate sheet for protection).

The Brief

Create a breakfast bar artwork on polycarbonate (acrylic sheet) and be covered by a second sheet to protect it (2 x 8mm extruded cut sheets)
Do TWO versions to choose from
Created in a free flowing a liquid style with plenty of swoops and swooshes
Lots and lots of colour and references to the raspberry on the kitchen walls and the verdigris finish on cast Buddhas

The Spec

Specially extruded 8mm clear polycarbonate sheets (no joins) cut to precisely 3500mm x 50mm to fit the space
A separate base of 5 different raspberry and pink colours of enamel paint
Top paint applications consisting of metallic gold and silver, a special ice-blue metallic and 19 other individual colours
Set behind protective sheet and sat in a bespoke stainless steel channel and retaining top bead
