This is the only one of the crystal and resin artworks that has a the ring centre coloured differently to the rest of the background. The deep lustre of purple helps define the centre of the piece beautifully.
It’s also the only one that has a pigment infused ring structure. The casting resin was gently mixed with a metallic copper pigment and then cast into the mould,
The background is very slightly coloured with a hint of lilac and purple. It’s a combination of a metal flake, silver pigment and a some very fine quantities of resin tint. This helps give a softer glow to the piece and suggests relaxation and calm.
The central cube was cast with a selection of silver crystals in the base then filled with clear resin before a light dusting of holographic flakes were placed over the top. Oh boy do they ever reflect the light! To the corners of the cube lie a single lilac and single purple lead crystal with laser cut facets.
Further to this you can also see a shallow cut blue marble square which was created using two shades of pigment powder and is solid all the way through. On the other side you can see another solid cube – this time in a light shimmering metallic silver and this is complimented by a small clear cube with a sprinkling of dark purple metallic flakes.
Towards the top there are further blocks; this time we see a large clear cube filled with yet another type of crystal. This time it’s a clear one that adds a frosted look and then this carries on to another smaller clear cube (with some more holographic flakes) and is finished off with a dense bronze metallic powder resin cube.
The last shape to mention is the small globe that sits in the bottom right hand corner. It’s the only one with a small globe and I think it looks ace next to all the regular shapes. Optically, it is 100% clear.
None of these artworks are complete without the small crystals. The whole point of these is to fuse materials into one seamless visual experience. The small crystals do exactly that.
They help define the boundaries of the large cast shapes and I have taken great care in how and where they are placed.
The most obvious immediate impact they have is one of light refraction. Because they are faceted they continually catch and reflect light so there’s a magical sparkle to each one as you allow yourself to move around it. There are 24 assorted types on Cassiopeia.
