Stellar is the only crystal and resin artwork that features a full size sphere.
There are plenty of reasons for that but the main one is that of time and patience. It’s taken me a ridiculous amount of time to perfect a globe shape and finish it to a standard I am happy with.
Look a little closer though and you’ll see a blue cube set inside it. That’s the reason I didn’t just get someone to make one for me. I wanted to be able to hand cast a perfect sphere with my own hand cast cube set inside it. To be honest I bet there’s a week of work in that alone. Buy hey ho, you gotta see these things through once you start right?
The circle is cast with a series of small silver crystals inside it and this is the only one where I have resisted filling the centre – I left it empty to show off the beautiful aluminium sheet underneath.
Inside the sparkling circle is another cube but this one has a further casting set inside it too. It’s a shard of black pigmented resin that’s infused with gold metallic flake. It really is gorgeous on its own let alone sat with all the other wonderful things.
As with all this series of artworks the background is a carefully mixed resin concoction that contains metal flakes and a liquid metal compound designed to go into epoxy resin.
The difference here though is the addition of a tiny copper flake. As we’re going with the copper and gold theme I wanted to carry that through into the poured layer that forms the background. It’s very subtle but if you catch the light the right way it’s simply magnificent.
There’s a definite autumnal feel to this artwork in my opinion. The inclusion of copper, gold and the tiniest hint of red all promote the feeling of seasonal transitions.
Of note here are two further cube shapes. The first one is the dark solid black one with the opulent scattering of gold metallic flake on the top. When viewed from the side it’s the one that really catches my eye.
Additionally there’s also one further cube to look at carefully and that’s the one made up from a multi-layered palette of blue, yellow, red and grey. There’s only a couple of successful multi layered cubes in these artworks and this is one of them.
The process is a nightmare to be honest as each level is cast separately. You can’t walk away and let it go off else you get a horizontal line and that’s a cop out! So you sit and wait, and wait, and wait until it’s just gelled enough to move around and then get the next colour in and so on.
Anyway, that little cube is fabulous – even if it was a stupid amount of effort to make it.
