Magellus is a large sized, modern art painting that features a base blend of blue, green and aqua colors. Over this is a series of overlapping arcs made out of thousands of tiny paint droplets, creating a stunning interference pattern across the canvas.

A technique like no other

Let’s get straight into those amazing droplets of paint. They are applied using a custom made spinning platform that we built ourselves. It’s a small wooden box that houses a battery and a speed controller (operated by remote). This in turn links to a small motor that spins a horizontal disc.

As the disc rotates, I add paint from a cup and the centrifugal force created throws the paint off the edge in the form of tiny drops. I control the final effect by constantly changing the speed, the paint viscosity, the paint volume and how long the disc rotates. A lot of the skill in this kind of ‘halo’ painting is managing these four dynamics simultaneously.

This incredible machine has no wires attached so it can be placed anywhere on a piece of canvas without a power cable trailing an empty line where paint should be falling.

Color choices

The background is a serene and gentle thing featuring a soft, blue and green mix with hints of aqua and white. The spots of paint include a dark blue, forest green and a spectacular yellow gold metallic. The four close-up photos will show you how rich and detailed these tiny paint drops are when you get your nose into the canvas.

The whole painting is harmonious, relaxed and very easy to live with. it’s an unusual thing too – I haven’t seen any hint of anything like this anywhere else. So, if your dining room or hallway is crying out for a statement piece (that doesn’t have to choke you every time you walk past) then this could be for you. Drop me a line below.
