Electrify

Breaking new ground

Electrify is large abstract painting created with pink, blue and black colored enamel paints. Added to these are dashes of white and silver. The style of the painting is something I can’t really quantify. I can normally talk about flows, rivers, stripes, explosions and things like that but in this instance i am a little stuck…

Partly this is because I haven’t really done a painting like this before so I’m in fresh waters, so to speak. On one hand it’s a regular and uniform collection of liquid islands interconnected with a muted wash of of all the colours mentioned above. On the other hand it’s a randomized collection of organic twists and turns that have absolutely no relation to anything!

But here’s what I do know, it’s absolutely freakin gorgeous! No, seriously, I mean it. The paint depth is striking at the first outset. This is because so much of the paint has pooled into the shapes you can see and that has intensified the depth of colour – it’s quite extraordinary really and not something I have seen before. There is also a real lustre to each shape that feels like some glass chasm. I am no orator but these are the only words I can find to describe them. Simply stunning.

Then there are the shapes in between. These are like transport highways to me; channels that allow everything to breathe and move freely. The paints here are less dense and are actually thinned down quite considerably. This has the effect of diluting the strength of the pigment and letting the heaviness of the paint turn to something altogether lighter. These pathways are just superb and are a perfect contrast to the heavier shapes.

Everywhere you look you find new things to look at and the level of detail is quite mesmerizing, especially where the thinned metallic silver has attached itself to the main colours. Add all of this up and what you have is quite a special piece of art. Unlike anything else it’s exquisitely finished, endlessly intriguing and always beautiful.
