For this particular resin and crystal artwork I decided to go with a green themed palette. The success of the piece revolves around the central green crystal. It’s the part from which all the other components exist.
However, there’s another one of these green crystals hidden away in the large cast cube at the top. I decided there wasn’t room for another one in its native form so I cast one inside a clear resin block. It’s been interesting to see how the refractive properties change when you cover the facets with a medium that has a different refractive index than air.
Using green all the way through could make things a little mundane. So I decided to pop a tiny splash of pink into the mix to liven things up a little.
The pink in question is made from a small non-reflective medium that’s been cast into the cube with the turquoise top. It’s just enough to catch your eye without it taking over and spoiling everything. Balance is a precarious thing.
The turquoise coloured metal flakes are a neat little touch that just breaks up the abundance of clear cast shapes and shiny things.
The four crystal fronds that form a gentle circular motion are a particularly prominent feature. Their inclusion suggests a gentle rotation, rather like the way a galaxy would rotate. Keeping a sense of motion and movement in a static object is a challenge I face constantly.
Finally then we have that amazing green metallic background. It’s a combination of a liquid metal compound, aluminium oxide powder and green Pearlex (a brand of resin pigment). Did I mention that it’s gorgeous? Well it is. Very.
