Alchemy of Fire is a large square abstract painting created with a number of different coloured enamel paints. The painting started out as a flat piece of canvas that was stapled to polycarbonate roof sheet of the same size. This roof sheet actually forms part of a larger contraption that I commonly refer to as my tilt/rotate table.
On this device I can mount flat canvas (up to 170cm square) onto a horizontal plane and then tilt it through 360°. Not only that, I can also rotate on the opposite axis through the same 360°. So this gives me a unique opportunity to let paint hang almost vertically while gravity takes over and also then allows me to do that the other way round and at any stage in between.
If you want to visualize that with the help of a video then check it out below.
One of the many benefits of using this piece of equipment is that you get to move paint over paint. As you put one layer over another you get mixing and blending and that often leads to some very interesting colour combinations as well as producing very fine details. You can get an idea about that if you look at the detailed photos attached to the page – especially the orange photo that almost looks like fire!
The ability to move an orientation away from horizontal changes the way the paint behaves. Then, as you leave it to level out and cure, other things begin to happen and this is where the painting takes on a completely organic direction; entirely at the behest of all the forces, physics and chemistry that it’s subjected to.
The colours are magnificent and feature turquoise, red, orange, black, gold, pink, burgundy and white.
Drop me a line and I will get back to you as soon as is humanly possible!
