The Valhalla Event is a square abstract painting created with just black and white as its primary colours. On to this layer I placed a striking maroon splash and then, as if that wasn’t enough, I came back to the canvas two weeks later with the mini spin machine to apply a few halos of paint in the form of droplets.
So what we have is a very unusual painting – even for me! It’s a canvas that combines some wonderful techniques to give a wholly unique finish and look.
The most noticeable feature on first glance is that piercing maroon splash that bursts through into the centre of the painting. it’s perfectly set against a swathe of white paint that surrounds it and has been placed in just the right position. It’s a bold feature and one that breaks up the whole painting. The fluid motion is always present and feels very alive to me. I like that.
The background is a mix of black and white colours applied with a roller. I also worked in some metallic silver in places too so it has a rather surprising sheen in some lighting conditions.
The next technique – the halo applications. There are a few other halo paintings for sale on the site at the moment so you can go check those out if you want to see the principle being used (most have their own creation videos so you can see exactly what I mean). Check these out: Ellipsis, Aureole, Sonic Boom.
As the halo’s are an additional feature and not the focus, I haven’t gone nuts on the volume of droplets. Instead I have put on the merest hints of them so you can at least appreciate the all-encompassing nature of these circles without it taking away from your enjoyment of the rest of the painting. There’s a giddy mix of small and large droplets in three different colours – just enough to add a little flash of colour.
The Valhalla Event was an impact on Jupiter’s moon Callisto that left a multi ring impact on the surface. This quote best sums it up and is from the German Aerospace Center:
“Voyager 2 imaged a ring-shaped structure on Jupiter’s moon Callisto on 6 March 1979, when the mission flew past at a distance of 214,000 kilometres. It is due to the impact of a large asteroid. The Valhalla impact basin is probably the largest impact structure in the Solar System; the concentric rings that formed in the ice crust during the impact have a maximum diameter of 3000 kilometres. Since the impact traces earlier markings through the melted and quickly refrozen ice, like ancient parchment writing, these structures on the icy moons are called palimpsests.”
So now you know!
