About Anthus

Anthus is a large abstract painting created with a series of overlapping radial arcs and semi circles. Some of these were moved around using a long pole with a window squeegee attached to it and others were poured on from shot glasses full of paint.

Let’s talk about the arrangement of the shapes first. I created this original piece of art after being inspired by a conversation around how plants grow. That may seem a very simple subject but it’s one that grew into a lengthy conversation about growth in the natural world and evolution, amongst other interwoven subjects.

A few days later I had come up with an idea for a couple of botanical themed artworks that could convey the feeling of growth whilst still maintaining a visual reference to something vaguely floral.

Colour inspiration

So, the idea was born and the movements had taken hold in my brain. That allowed me to move onto the colour choices. At the time I had a corporate commission I was quoting on and had got to the stage of choosing colours (they since changed their mind but that’s another story…).

The palette was strong and one that excited me so I went ahead with the paint order anyway with the thought that I could do something with it.

So I did and Anthus is the result.

The Scotland connection

There’s another one to go with it too but I shall post that one out another time. Now, I don’t know about you but I also get a very Scottish feeling whenever I look at this painting.

I’m not sure if I have memories of highland heather when I was a kid (we had some holidays in the highlands as I recall) or images of tartan as I gaze at the canvas, but there’s definitely something north of the border going on for me.

The combination of the blue green and whisps of pink might be responsible for that. Then we have the gold and copper accents that are woven into all layers which add a deep, shimmering robustness to the overall composition.

Add all that into a blended off-white base and you have the perfect backdrop for a truly delightful abstract art work.
