A while back I was approached by a developer who was looking for an artist to create a series of individually tailored, bespoke artworks for a prestigious new build in one of Cheltenham’s most exclusive and desirable postcodes. After visiting my Stroud art gallery, where I keep all my originals, they decided I was right for the project.
As the Balcarras Lane project began the first fix I carried out an extensive site visit and took preliminary measurements. Part of the success of the project was to embrace the fit and finish of the interior decor and furnishings; requiring a sympathetic approach in interpreting and visualizing each space from a comprehensive set of mood boards.
The painting sessions began and over six weeks the paintings were created. My clients came to visit the gallery to check progress and give me their feedback. From this a selection of paintings was chosen for the installation, after we had taken the time to decide on what would work best for the spaces.
The project was completed on time and on budget. For more information on the developers see the Marcus Homes website.
Brief: One portrait 3m painting for the entrance and one landscape 3m painting for the atrium landing.
As the space is actually one double height aspect the two pieces needed to work together. The 1st one is as you walk in to the entrance, reaching over the height of the glass balustrades on the upper level.
The 2nd is in the same palette of colour but hangs on the upper level; visible as you walk through the door. Great to have two grand and contemporary statements as soon as you walk in through the door
Brief: Fresh lime greens with a minimal, linear feel.
To echo the vast amount of glass on three sides this painting is about connecting to the outside. No overdose of colour here – just a simple, balanced expanding movement. Colour matched to the window steels and painted onto a clean, white base layer. Just enough wow without the fuss and bother.
Brief: Two shades of mustard, steel grey and black. Not too mad.
One to go with a grand piano; requiring bold black shaping, clearly defined areas of colour and a deep glossy finish. The other was for a less pronounced painting; opting for more subtle tonal shifts; and despite the warnings I still went a bit mad. And it worked!
Two mustard shades are used and along with two blacks and three silvers.
Brief: Opulent, rich colours, linear, featuring burgundy and cream
Painted using a series of opposing lines and sweeping movements. I also added some layers of metallic gold and copper, suspended in a clear resin. These catch light from certain angles then disappear again; an interesting effect.
Brief: Must feature colours from the pink and mustard themed bedrooms
This is a painting that can be seen as you enter the property through a large gallery window overlooking the driveway. It features soft pinks and silvers that feature in the girls bedroom suite, and also mustard and grey colours from the boys bedroom.
Style is a combination of defined linear structure and soft tonal blends.
I’ve worked very hard to help create something special for my clients; if you have feedback on this project I would love to hear it. Don’t hold back – say what you think. Thanks Clive! Well, we are always pretty busy to be fair but it’s interesting to know where everyone comes from in the first instance – mostly it’s organically driven from the website but posts like this can help demonstrate the versatility of what can be done!!
