Warp Speed is a square abstract painting that’s created with purple, burgundy, marron, pink and white paints. I have also used a rather wonderful metallic gold which has fused itself with most of the other colours to produce a very subtle effect. There’s also a hint of red in the centre that gives the painting its focal point.
I recorded the whole process on video and you can see that below in its entirety. it’s well worth a watch as it shows, live and unscripted, exactly what happens when I am not happy with something and then make a small change that could spell disaster if it’s not executed properly. Even though I know what I’m doing there’s always the risk of things going wrong and this paint session was on an absolute knife edge.
Of course things turned out great but the path I took to get there was anything but smooth – something our viewers at the time made me very aware of in the live chat!
As part of the live stream broadcast that accompanies the painting is a camera shot that shows you the birth of this incredible piece as it happens. This is provided by a camera suspended from my spin table. What this does is keep the painting view static whilst the room spin around! It’s mesmerizing and completely unique.
Equally surprising is the way in which I have applied the paint. It’s actually dispensed from a cup in gentle loops onto the canvas surface, after I had covered the canvas with a base coat of burgundy and purple. Check out the first spin and tell me you aren’t impressed…
What finally came off the spin table was a confident and enigmatic abstract artwork that perfectly embodies the feeling of travelling through space. The choice of pink, purple and gold is inspired and there’s just the right amount of light and dark to define the depth required to make you think you’re being catapulted through a wormhole.
Unless… you see a flower or an angel’s wing or something completely different.
Drop me a line and I will get back to you as soon as is humanly possible!
