The combination of red, black and white enamel paints (and the addition of gold leaf) is set off in a very dramatic way against the array of strong shapes and forms that appear within the painting. That huge Red Sea of paint is absolutely dominating yet strangely tamed by the black fingers of paint that rein in the red with a tenacious resolve.
Inside the black fronds there are hints of pebble grey that offer suggestions of faces within; held in permanent suspension. Intricate blends of red and white are weaved alongside the larger applications so that the painting works close up as well as from a distance.
