Unknown Pleasures is a large, square abstract painting that was created using enamel paint. The method of creation is an unusual one and there’s even a video of how I did it (see blow). It features colors from most of the major color groups that have been melted into a mass of wonderful effects and details.
The painting began as a flat piece of canvas that was stapled onto my pan and tilt table. it’s a unique piece of equipment that allows me to keep a level, horizontal surface as well as tilt it upright. It also has the ability to rotate round too. If your brain is still working that out then check out the video and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
I base coated the canvas with a dark blue, grey and black mix to gave the surface a more even texture. I also did this because I wanted to let the darker colors mix in to the brighter ones I was going to put over the top. That began with a split pour cup that had four individual colors in it. You can see how that first lot of paint worked out in the video.
Building color is fundamental in these tilt/rotate paintings. Once the angle is moved away from horizontal I am at the behest of gravity so being able to move paint into something credible can be a bit hit and miss. To a certain extent I have to let physics take over once the canvas is covered and then just leave it to work itself out. For the most part I have the control I need but there’s always that element of danger with a technique like this.
The result of all of this effort is a painting that delivers on every level. Its bold and bright whilst also being deep and thoughtful. it has rivers of paint everywhere, it has texture it has detail and it has impact. Whatever space this occupies it absolutely owns it – and in a good way! it’s ability to fit in is quite remarkable and that’s down to the combination of colors. Its earthy, natural side helps keep it grounded whilst the energetic and playful side keeps your eyes entertained endlessly.
Add a coupe of spotlights however and the painting reaches even higher levels of intrigue as the metallics start to pop. The nuances of color also begin to show as well as the incredible levels of detail. It’s hard for me to sound objective because I painted it and I love it but I assure you that this is an absolute belter of an artwork.
You may have noticed that I have shown it hung in different orientations on the photographs and that’s because you can hang this in any way you want – even as a diamond. The painting feels different each time you rotate it so you can change the dynamic at any given point to suit your mood or taste.
So if you’re looking for a conversation piece or something to fill up that large empty wall space you have then this would be an excellent place to start. Oh, and it’s also named after the seminal album by Joy Division in case you’re wondering…
Drop me a line and I will get back to you as soon as is humanly possible!
