I’m spinning around!
Well now, what we have here is a mesmerizing square abstract painting that was created using my amazing spin machine. Essentially this is a rotating turntable (that I can make into various sizes and shapes) that creates a centrifugal force to move paint outwards from wherever it’s applied.
On this occasion I chose a monochromatic color palette (black and white) and added in a buttermilk (cream) base layer to show them off. That addition alone creates a wonderful backdrop to the density and drama of the layers that go over the top and also helps to soften the entire painting and make it a little easier to live with.
Black and white – my favourite
Black and white ate the extremes of colour for me and I always like to play with them – especially with a spin technique. You get all kinds of unusual effects and it’s different every time. This was the first painting using the revised version of the table – now boasting full remote control.
The application of the paint before spinning does, to a large degree, dictate how the painting will look. But of course there are many other factors that also come in to play here; rotational speed, paint volumes, duration etc. The results of which are some extraordinarily beautiful and delicate details.
Embrace the grey
You may already have worked out or seen that where the back and white mix you get grey. Now, far from being a dull mid point these combinations are actually highly nuanced and very intricate. The range of tonal variations is surprising and becomes more evident when you get your nose right in.
This feature is further enhanced by the addition of that cream/buttermilk bas layer that quite often mixes with the black and white to produce some really interesting, and much softer blends.
