I think the title is highly appropriate. Little care for rules and a wanton disregard for convention; this painting is just doing its own thing the way it wants to.
If I’m honest I had originally planned to use a muted range of colours and create a dark, storm-like painting. Then I got a new metallic gold paint delivered and fell in love. So it had to get incorporated somewhere. The lustre, depth and radiance of it is something else. No camera can do it justice.
Anyway, the painting. Let’s be honest here – it won’t be to everyone’s taste. It’s loud, difficult and (according to my social media followers) looks like a Scorpion’s tail, a fetus, an alien resurrection and the Apocalypse. Personally, I call that a resounding success! However…
It is actually a very beautiful and lyrical piece when you see it for real. Like a priceless jewel buried beneath dark layers of soil and stone, waiting for someone to unearth it’s brilliant beauty. And that’s the secret to understanding a painting like this; it has another side to it that captivates rather than repels. If you can let that in you’ve done something amazing.
Among the obedient flow of life and the control over what we do and, increasingly, what we can express, it’s nice to be able to turn around and walk in the opposite direction. Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and go for it.
If we could see more of the world as awesome instead of ridiculous I wonder how much better we would feel? In my own world it’s two fingers up to the nay-sayers and a poke in the ribs of conformity.
