A large purple and orange abstract, featuring gold and black
Big, strong shapes and bold, brash colours; everything I love about doing a big piece of art.
Definitely one for the purists who really don’t care what people think.
And what a great way to say ‘Have some of that!’…
Purple and orange
I love purple and orange as a colour combination and I guess this is one of those paintings that I guess you’ll either love or loathe in a heartbeat. From the reaction I have had so far there seems to be no middle ground on this one. And that’s just perfect for me as it means I have done exactly what I set out to do. Allow me to explain.
A little bit different
I can keep my work safe, by this I mean I can use simple shapes and uniform colours to create art that will happily hang on your walls and blend in to the rest of your life very happily. Nothing wrong with that at all. However, just once in a while it’s nice to remind myself that I am still human and have a pulse. To that end I go off on some mad tangent and do something a little out of the ordinary. That’s exactly how this painting was conceived.
Yet it’s no less thought about or planned I may add. The base layering of orange and purple was good enough to stand on its own merit anyway – even before I attacked it with a can of black paint. But it’s precisely this kind of behaviour that makes this one a bit special.
Respect your decisions
That’s no bearing on whether you like it or not though – that’s your own emotion – the special bit in my mind is the courage to do something you’ve not done before, to stand behind your decisions and to damn well have a go. Maybe, also, to not be too complex or precious about something.
But it didn’t stop there. After that rich, glossy black was applied I went for it again with a series of careful applications in gold and white; much needed additions for what was a rather dark painting (even with all that purple and orange abounding).
Run wild
So what we have in the end is a large original artwork that doesn’t give a shit for a start. It’s bright, stylish and different. I may also like to point out that the black is very very shiny and as a consequence of this if you have a space where natural light hits it from the front forget it – this is so reflective it will bounce it all back and you won’t see it.
This will need to be in a dark space or recess, somewhere where artificial light will get it or where it could be hung on a wall that has light entering from an angle or from the sides.
