Ocean of Storms (a reference to an area on the moon that’s named in Latin as Oceanus Procellarum) is a square painting that is created from just two colours of enamel paints.
Painting in just black and white is quite a challenge sometimes. And although it’s my favourite colour combination to work in, I never assume I will get something I like. These extremes in colour represent the furthest points of dark and light and so, their power should never be underestimated.
There are is an interesting contradiction in my head when I think of what this reminds me of. On one hand it’s a NASA photo of mountain ranges taken from space whilst on the other it’s a snapshot of human tissues and cells – as if we’re seeing it from inside the body.
You may see something completely different of course and that’s absolutely fine. The key to connecting with an abstract art work is for it to make you feel something. Our brains are hardwired to make sense of the world around us so it’s perfectly reasonable for it to try and slot the subject matter in to something tangible that exists.
The painting itself is wonderful expression of the paints I use. Enamel paint can form some incredible numeral pathways and an almost infinite level of detail. So this artwork will keep on revealing itself for years to come.
This modern art painting is relaxed at all times yet has a slightly edgy feel to it. The stark contrast between black and white is always present and is a timely reminder of how these two extremes can coexist in harmony.
Drop me a line and I will get back to you as soon as is humanly possible!
