A minimal, yellow art canvas painting with a splash of blue
A deceptively simple yet joyous, sunny painting created using two very bright yellow colours, a few sweeps of chocolate and white and a bright flash of blue.
Like having your neck rubbed on a breezy summers’ day.
THE STORY BEHIND IT
Noble Samurai is a calm and reassuring yellow art canvas painting. It’s bright sunny nature lifts even the darkest room. This painting really lights up when the sun shines on it; that’s when you get to appreciate the huge expanse of yellow and melon colours.
The inclusion of the ‘7’ shape in a few shades of chocolate brown (and a hint of white) brings a sense of perspective and gravity. I have been told it looks like a chocolate eclair at the end. I have been extremely careful not to overdo this application. It had to be the right shape to carry your eyes towards the blue slither on the opposing side. I get very concerned about composition, especially when the features of a painting are simple and bold.
I am particularly proud of my accomplishments with the blue hint down the side; mastering a new technique of bending set paint around a 90° angle as I stretched it around the frame. It’s taken me some time to get this right – especially when you consider that enamel paint is not designed to bend round corners once it’s dry. By it’s very nature it is hard and resistant to being moved once cured. But practice really does make perfect. And the help of a new liquid priming solution has allowed me to retain some of the flexibility I need to get the canvas to flex where I need it too.
You’re not going to necessarily be choosing this kind of painting to match specific interior decor, instead I see it hanging in a bright conservatory or sun room, maybe even an indoor swimming pool where it can get bathed in different light and shade. That’s when you’ll really get the greatest joy out of the painting.
Yellow can be a very overwhelming colour to integrate into a room space so it’s important to consider the accent colours it will sit with. I’ve always loved the addition of blue so it was an easy choice when this was being conceived.
