An unusual creation
Midnight Masquerade is a very unusual painting, even by own niche standards. I think that is partly because of the way in which it was created – which was with a snow shovel! Yes, you heard that right, a snow shovel. Make sure you check out the video below to see exactly what I mean.
Unusual techniques often come with unusual outcomes and this is no exception. The combination of black and white paints applied from the end of snow shovel, together with some interesting arms movements has given us and underpinning of dramatic proportions.
Layering of colour
On to this I decided to add some colours. Purple and green were the first to be applied over the black and white. The rich metallic flake inside the purple is heavenly, like candy treacle. Even at this point it didn’t feel quite right so I absolutely went for it and got the baking tray out. I loaded it with orange, yellow and white and laid it out liberally across the centre of the canvas.
The result of this abundant layering a volumous paint application is a supremely stylistic, highly individual abstract painting that’s is so densely packed with detail that I simply can’t capture it with a camera. So if the initial impact of doesn’t get you then the details will.
Fuck it all!
With a painting like this I think it’s good to leave the notion of matching your interior decor behind and accept the colours and shapes for exactly what they are – a riotous cacophony of physics and a middle finger to conformity. I don’t blame you for wanting something that goes with your sofa but at the end of the day who fucking cares?
Life is short, live the bloody thing. Buy what you want, look at what you want and do all the stuff that your conformist peer group tells you not to do.
Stop listening to the naysayers, land on your own moon for once. Seriously, the world is so much more enjoyable when you can let go of the bullshit that you’re expected to carry around.
