Lumina is a small sized, square abstract painting that was created with beautiful selection of bold, bright colours. I used several techniques to create it – including the use of my spin machine. Added to that were as series of scoops done with a plastic grout spreader as well as a good old paint brush for the base layer.
It’s great to be able to mix tools and application methods because I can combine effects at the same time on the same canvas, often with a dramatic outcome. However, the first thing I notice here is the colour and boy, do they work!
The combination of metallic blue, magenta, lime green and a dash of white have resulted in a painting that is packed full of life as well as bursting with energy. In some areas they are blocky and rigid and in others they are soft and relaxing. What lies in between these extremes is an absolute riot of form and colour. Every single part of the canvas is filled with tiny details, explosive blends and stunning effects.
Enamel paints like mine have a very deep lustre so the colours always look deep and rich – never washed out like some acrylic paints do. It’s part of the reason i use them – there’s just nothing else that gives you such a high quality finish.
That incredible lime green is what really makes this painting. On one hand it’s a sharp, citrus blast and on the other it’s a fresh, warm embrace. It has the ability to join the metallic blue and magenta pink together to form a painting that ticks so many boxes. It’s uplifting, vibrant, interesting, mesmerizing and just bloody awesome! How much more persuading do you really need?
This is a good time to talk about textures. It’s difficult to show those with a camera, despite trying my hardest. It is the action of standing in front of it that reveals the true depth and range of the painting finishes.
The volumes and viscosities of paint I use vary greatly and I like to mix these up when I paint on the same canvas. So in this piece we have high and low points as well as gloss and semi gloss finishes – all of which add up to give you an additional element of surprise, especially as light moves over the enamel paint surfaces.
Drop me a line and I will get back to you as soon as is humanly possible!
